DISTANCE LEARNING ASSIGNMENTS

  

OFFICE HOURS for Week 7

Email/Teams: Daily (M-F) 1-3pm (can set up voice/video chat if necessary)

Teams Video Help-Session: Wed (5/13) & Thu (5/14) 1-2pm (Drop in for help.  You can join the meeting by logging into Microsoft Teams through your ClassLink and clicking on the invitation to "join the meeting".  This meeting is NOT required!)

WEEK 9: May 25-29  Due Wed. May 27

WEEK 9 OVERVIEW:  This is the final week for the 2019-20 school year!  This Wednesday (5/27) is the last day that assignments will be accepted for credit.

 

WEEK 9 (5/25-5/29)  DUE WED. MAY27

1) Click HERE to take a student feedback survey for Mr. Hanna's 8th Grade Science class.

There are 10 survey questions to complete.  You should be able to access this form on a computer or mobile device (such as a phone).  Your answers will be anonymous, so PLEASE BE HONEST in order for me to get the best feedback possible!  Remember to click "Submit" at the bottom once you've finished.

2) Be sure to submit all of your missing assignments (weeks 3-8) to Mr. Hanna by Wednesday, May 27th.

Check your grades in FOCUS!  I had several students who had emailed me assignments but for various reasons did not get credit (which I fixed once I found out).  Please double check that you got credit for your work!

3) Come to school Monday, June 1st at the designated time (see link below) to clean out your locker, turn in materials, collect yearbooks/shirts/etc...

WEEKS 7-8 OVERVIEW:  Weeks 7 and 8 will continue our reveiw of 6th and 7th grade standards.  First, week 7 will include study of Earth's Spheres, a 6th grade standard which was the lowest score of all Earth Science standards on our pretest at the beginning of this year.  Week 8 will discuss the different types of energy and the law of conservation of energy, a 7th grade standard that is important in all areas of science.

WEEKS 5-6 OVERVIEW:  We will continue to look at the scientific theory of evolution by natural selection during these weeks.  First, we'll address common misconceptions about the theory that are often the source of controversy among those who don't understand what the theory of evolution actuall states.  Then, we'll consider the physical evidence we've observed that supprots the current theory.

WEEKS 3 & 4: Apr. 13-17 & 20-24   DUE: Fri., Apr. 24

WEEKS 3-4 OVERVIEW: These weeks will begin our review of middle school science content.  Before the virus disrupted our lives, we would have reviewed all of the middle school curriculum in preparation for the Florida Statewide Science Assessment (FSSA).  Although the FSSA has been cancelled for this year, my plan is to continue this review the best we can to make sure you're as prepared for high school as possible.

We'll begin with life science for two reasons.  First, you'll need to take/pass biology in high school, so reviewing this material will be important since we had very limited life science in the 8th grade standards.  Second, some of you never got to cover this material in 7th grade (I know Mrs. McCune's students did, but from what I've been told, students in other classes may not have gotten to this material last year).

WEEK 4 (4/20-4/24)     Due Fri., Apr. 24

IMPORTANT (PLEASE READ): This week, we take what we learned last week about heredity and use it to look at the bigger picture of how traits are passed through many, many generations and how that leads to changes in populations over time.  This concept has a name that can be a touchy subject for some, "evolution".  Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation out there about evolution and people will "tune out" without understanding what the theory actually says.  Week 4 will discuss the mechanics of species change (how it happens) using the concept of heredity that is far less controversial.  Next week, we'll discuss evidence for the scientific theory of evolution by natural selection as well as some of the common misconceptions that create much of the controversy.

WEEKS 1 & 2: March 30-April 3 and April 6-April 10

NOTE - These packets were developed by LCS using 6th, 7th, and 8th grade standards.  Because we finished the 8th grade standards before spring break, you should have been exposed to all of the topics included in these assignments (though it may have been as far back as 6th grade).  In addition, most of the work is accessible through the reading provided in the packet.  Remember, I'm here to support you!

- You will not need to stay in the meeting the whole time, it is just to check in with me and ask questions if you have them.

- You can pop into the meeting any time within the 30 minute window, you do not need to be there right at 2:00pm.
